A Sad State of Affairs

For the last 24 hours, it’s been the “Tiger Woods Show”. Wall to wall Tiger. You can not avoid it. I was in an airport for a flight back to Boston last night, and the TVs in the terminal were playing the Tiger Show. On my JetBlue TV, Tiger. On my drive home from the airport, I thought I would get away from the Tiger Show by listening to some talk radio. Michelle McPhee – talking about the Tiger. Usually when she is on a topic I am not interested in, I flip to the sports talk guys. Nope, also beating the Tiger drum. Why does this man draw so much attention? Why do people care? I just do not get it.

At the same time as The Tiger show is playing, there are Iranians perfecting a nuclear bomb. There is a major offensive under way in Afghanistan. The Olympics are in full swing, the Greeks are about to default on sovereign debt and bring Europe crashing down with it. The Democrats are spending the country into oblivion. There ARE other things worthy of our attention. If the Obama administration is clever and quick, they can use the Tiger Show distraction to slip healthcare through.

For the life of me, I simply can not figure out the interest in a golfer. Or ANY professional athlete for that matter. The Olympics I get – kids pouring their heart into their sport, on a world stage, for the honor of their country. When I look at those kids, or the kids in the military, I have hope for the future of this country. When I look at the time, ink, pixels, and words wasted analyzing Tiger Woods, I lose that hope. There are much bigger issues than when Tiger will golf again. Come on people, snap out of it!
